History of Khazaars

Age of Darkness

The first murians (humans) of the old south to walk upon the land that would become known as Khazaars were of Assryian decent. In the year 2579 these humans made it to the north and made contact with pockets of savage reptilian races that roamed freely through the area. The humans spread throughout all the lands between the Godshead mountains and the Unicorn forest and made it to the northern coast.

Due to the continued harassment of the reptilians the humans formed large communities to afford for their own protection. While they started out as petty monarchies out of necessity within a few short decades they had advanced into huge kingdoms. By 2523 the area was comprised of just 5 vast realms, the kingdoms: Arnu, Bamoth, Stalton, Yurick and Zane. But if anything the security of the kingdoms was even poorer than before, and harassment of the reptilians had progressed to attacks. And in 2504 scouts from the kingdom of Stalton noticed a huge army of reptilians massing on the borders between the kingdoms.

The reptilians were apparently a lot less savage and a lot more organized than the humans ever imagined. They claimed to be remnants of what they called the Great Lizzar Empire, which by their accounts at one time encompassed nearly all of north. Some great tragedy had befallen them thousands of years before and decimated their numbers and their society.

Thaddeus the first, the king of Stalton sent out riders to warn the neighboring kingdoms but it was already too late for some. Vast armies of Lizzar struck out against all of the five kingdoms at once. Due to the suddenness and ferocity of the attacks the Lizzar had the humans on the run from the beginning. Before a proper defense could be mounted they had overrun the kingdom of Arnu. Only an alliance between the remaining kingdoms and the magical creatures from the Unicorn Forest allowed the murians to triumph. The deciding battle of the war took place in the foothills of Stalton, where its king struck down the great Lizzar chieftan. Without his leadership his army folded allowing the Staltonians to come to the aid of their neighbors and to eventually defeat the remainder of the floundering Lizzar armies. The Lizzar continue to raid the four kingdoms for many years to come but they never again rise to pose a serious threat.

In 2443 the four kingdoms have their first serious contact with the Palo’dainian Empire. In the years past, interaction had been limited due to the unicorn forest and the great swamp on Khazaars’ western borders. But after the fall of the Lizzar Empire travel between the two nations suddenly had few obstacles. For several hundred years these meetings were friendly and peaceful, as it was well known that the last king of Stalton had and was betrayed by a Palo‘dainian confidant.

By 2183 the kingdoms of Bamoth and Stalton begin fighting battles against the Empire of Palo’dainia and the Iron Circle cult. In response to increasing pressure from Palodainia’s expansion, the four kingdoms are forced to unite under one banner. The kingdoms of Yurick, Bamoth, Stalton and Zane form a coalition of states under the guidance of king Gideon Zane. These societies merge into the nation of Khazaars in 2154. The Holy Orders religion has spread throughout this area and the nation considers Aaroth, Ninurte and Enkath their patrons.

The combined might of the four kingdoms seems to give pause to the leaders of Palo’dainia. In 2138 the iron circle hatch a plot and manage to transform the Unicorn forest into a pestiferous swamp, thereby extending reaches of the northern great swamp. This new barrier between the nations stifle the battle plans of Khazaars. Palo’dainia stops its attacks and hostilities between these nations cease for a time, though resentment lingers on both sides.

Aflhiem and Khazaars begin fighting in the Zebulon Valley as both nations have begun expanding into it by 2018. The Murians are unable to devote their full might to this campaign due to the renewed aggression of Palodainia on their western border, and the Sylvanholm Aflin of northern Aflhiem do not want war with the Murians. Khazaars and Aflhiem strike a bargain and grant the valley to a group of Aluftian settlers in 2004.

Age of Heroes

For the next hundred years small skirmishes with Palo’dainia continue and that nation continues to grow more powerful. Their Iron Circle cult becomes even more arrogant and begins to expand beyond the nation’s borders by 1924. The Holy Orders religion begins venomous condemnation of the Iron Circle and all heretical religions by 1909. And in 1907 Palo’dainia starts aggressive expansion into both Khazaars and the neighboring nation of Dranthis.

The power of the Palo’dainian nation is undeniable. The leaders of both Khazaars and Dranthis felt that without allies they would fall before the empire. They were desperate for help against Pal’dainia but they could not convince any to help them. Luckily for them the Holy Orders of Chronis call the leaders of all northern nations to a war council on the Isle of Calimaan in 1901. The priests proclaim the Holy Crusade and make it the duty of all mortals to convert non-believers. The crusade drives the world for the next half century. Religious zeal explodes in every corner of the continent and followers of all religions declared heretical by the Holy Orders are converted or wiped out. Realizing what is about to come against them the Iron Circle halts their attacks.

The armies of Dranthis and Khazaars are joined by those of Toltec, Aflhiem, Zenoah and RocEmingrad to form a united front against Palo’dainia by 1884. After only five years of war, the Iron Circle seems to disappear without a trace. Without their leaders, the Palodainian army folds and is easily defeated within a year. The nation’s lands, now without leadership are given over to Dranthis, Toltec and Khazaars.

Zuron has been king of Dranthis for only three years in 1805. Zuron is a great man, his nation’s greatest ruler since Hural Dranthis. There is great unrest amongst his people and those of all human lands in the north. The Easterner Alliance has strengthened the borders of those nations. To their west the Toltec Empire has expanded their navy and is strengthening their hold over the northern seas. Khazaars’ king, William Zane attends the Murian Summit called by Zuron. These leaders of nations meet with the murian leaders of the Marnier Kings alliance. Trent Mallory king of Haven-Trithos and Robert Raine of Permia unify their nations with those of Dranthis and Khazaars under the rule of Zuron. This united nation becomes known as Lemuria.

Khazaars is now only a barony of Lemuria and so becomes embroiled in tensions between Lemuria and the Easterners Alliance. But peace and cooperation is settled between these two groups as early as 1776 with the signing of the Murian/Aflin Alliance and the eventual building of the massive fortress Jor’magund in Permia. Khazaars remains at peace for a long while.

It is not until 1680 when the shipping lanes off of Khazaars’north coast begins to feel the full might of the Magund. All of Lemuria’s northern coastland has always known the anger of Magund. Shipping lanes in the area have been randomly harassed since they were first used. Murian encroachment on their last remaining stronghold has again driven the Magund to the point where they are fearful of Murian intent for their lands. Shipping lanes in the area are shut down due to the attack of nearly every ship in the channels.

In 1676, dragons begin attacking the mainland. The Magund seem intent on reclaiming some of their former lands. The Holy Orders declare the Second Holy Crusade. This holy war was the duty of all mortals. Armies from all good nations mass in the north. The war had only just begun when the leadership of the Guild of Thirteen, headed by AlecXyinth Shalmanseer and Surik Dranthis return from Le’Magund with insurances of peace from the Ancient Council of Magund.

On his 65th birthday with the weight of age upon him, Surik Dranthis (king of Lemuria) named AlecXyinth Shalmanseer as heir to Lemuria. This caused turmoil among his people, especially those loyal to his brothers. This step by Surik to ensure the safety of his people was not seen as such by most of them. The Dranthis Revolt was a short but bloody revolution. Surik called upon the Order of Silver Star and the Dragon Circles to calm his countryside. Surik’s brothers and those loyal to them were rounded up quickly. This great king did not have the heart to put his brothers to death. Instead he put them on ships and exiled them from the nation in 1661.

Surik Dranthis dies in 1646 and the rule of Lemuria passed to AlecXyinth Shalmanseer. He is also the ruler of Alfhiem. He unites the two nations and they become known as Pannu’gaia. Khazaars becomes a minor barony in this larger nation but they are at peace for over three centuries. It is not until the Gidish rebellion of 1351 that their armies are used to help a neighboring province of Toltec gain its independence. And again there is a period of peace until 999 when the Red Death plague reaches Khazaars. The Holy Orders are unable to cure the infected and so Khazaars loses nearly half its population before the plague is cured in 805.

There is also an ascendance of religious and wizardly cults in the area. Many of them raise to powerful positions as peace and the plague drive the society into complacency. Notably, there is a resurgence of the Iron Circle in the areas bordering New Palo’dainia by 966. But there is also a presence of the Cult of Pheonix, The Church of Blood, the Cult of Lizzar and the Darkhold in Khazaars.

In 951 in Permia, the cult of Phoenix assassinated AlecXyinth Shalmanseer and Pannu’gaia descends into madness. Following the assassination and the Shamanseer Purge the empire began to break up. In 909 the Breaking Wars began with a rebellion by nearly every murian barony. With populations depleted by the plague, these were not actual wars, but battles are fought and lives lost. In the interest of saving those lives remaining, Galen Dur current ruler of Pannu’gaia called a truce among the Murian factions in 901 and gave each murian kingdom back its anonymity. And so in 901, Khazaars simply ceased to exist.

Age of Destiny

The four kingdoms that once formed Khazaars do not reunite until 743. The murian houses: Yurick, Stalton and Zane reunite with the now amurian house Bamoth and the newer amurian great-house Ar’nuanna. Under the rule of William Zane, the influence of the nation expands to all lands north of the Jezreel range, including the bays of Durga and Khmer and the mainland’s northern coast. This expansion puts them closer to Zenoah and just across the sea of Bengal from the harrowed Oissin kinol.

Just as odds of an Oissin Kinol victory in the Lingonberry War seem long, they gain aid from unexpected quarters. Zenoah, Khazaars and RocEmingrad form the Lingonberry Alliance with the Oissin kinol. Caught in the pincer attack of four armies, Aflhiem’s legions are scattered and retreat south of the Dark Sea. The area is split between Zenoah, Khazaars and the kinolin with most going to the kinolin. They declare their homeland, Sangala in 730.

In 721, after increasing pressures to curtail the lawlessness of the area from Khazaars, Southern Lemuria and Gidi’alah, great houses of the former nation of Dranthis begin violent reunification of their former kingdom. The process takes time and the period becomes known as the Dranthis Restoration Uprising. The amurian, Timis Dur becomes king of the two northern provinces of New Dranthis and Old Palo’dainia in 689.

Sigurd dur’Authalar, Thane of Medeba calls northern leaders to convene a second Council of the North in 553. Leaders from: Khazaars, Zenoah, Neh’eflem, RocEmingrad, Alfhiem, Dei’Guan, Sangala and Le’Magund are invited to the Summit at Joppa. Shipping lanes and trade route through Zebulon valley and the sea of Balaram are agreed on in council. RocEmingrad reopens trade with western murians to bring their and their allies goods to market.

In what many ascribe as the actual end of the Breaking Wars, great houses once part of the great nation Lemuria come to an agreement after long years of negotiation and war. The Lemish Reunification was born of necessity rather than being due to greatness of any particular leader among nations. Southern Lemuria, Khazaars and New Dranthis solidify their might against the rising danger of the Living Cosmic Brotherhood’s control of Old Palo’dainia. And Khazaars again becomes a barony, but of Amuria this time.

During the Third Crusade Amuria and all 5 Seas Treaty nations rise up to remove any remaining traces of the Church of Blood within them. After the blood purge the Holy Northern Alliance readies itself to remove heretics remaining in the north and Alfhiem. Sabbac Raine II calls the third Council of the North26 in 443. He hosts the Mariner Kings and leaders from Zenoah, Neh’eflem, RocEmingrad, Alfhiem, Dei’Guan, Sangala and Le’Magund on Artain’ban in the northern reaches of Khazaars.

In 400 Korg V of Mallory, the king of Amuria dies. The Aarothian Senate picks William Zane of Khazaars to be the nation’s second king. William is the High-knight of Silver Star and his appointment to the throne is popular. He is a good a decent man and rules Amuria justly during his reign. He is also the first person from Khazaars to become king of either Lemuria or Amuria.

In 302 during the Brothers War the Tyrian forces get mired down fighting in the highlands of New Dranthis and never manage to strike against Khazaars. This would prove to be the final undoing of their campaign. Taylor Zane organizes his forces and allies with Neh’eflem, Zenoah and RocEmingrad. They begin coordinated counterattacks against the Tyrians which become known as the Hearthlight Uprisings. These actions stymie the Tyrian offensive and allow other counterattacks to be launched across Amuria.

In 277 Lucian Zane formed a coalition with the great houses; Dur, Ryan, Kish, Mallory, Odisus, Yurick and Frey. Titling themselves the Hunger Dogs Coalition77, they call Amuria’s first Council of Great Houses61 and directly challenged the rule of house Ryn. After gaining an audience with the king for a redress of grievances, they spoke out against him in his own court. When all else failed, they assume no other recourse but to amass their forces and march on Jor’magund in 275.

After the fall of house Ryn this new council would serve in tandem with the king as its ruling body. It will consist of; one member of each great house, the leader of Skartaris, one member of the Binds of Circles, the high knight of the Silver Star, and the viceroys of each gnomish guild. The Order of Aaroth would no longer have the power to pick the king of Amuria. Responsibility for the choosing was now given to the council. The state religion would still worship Aaroth but his priests will be no more than advisors to kings. Many bylaws were set up to keep the new government in check. The people of Amuria would never again pay for their leader’s weakness. Amuria’s Council of Great Houses elects their first king. Lucian Zane is crowned in 271. He is the light that brings his kingdom out of darkness after its many hardships.

In 264 El’zid Ne’tholin the Speaker of Aelethon calls for the Fourth Council of the North. At the Summit of Kithians, he hosts representatives from; Amuria, Khazaars, Zenoah, RocEmingrad, Dei’Guan, Sangala, Le’Magund, Heaverglem, Gidi’alah, Uthnal, Netherlund, Nor’drani and Medeba. In council they discuss new trade routes around Le’Magund and through the sea of Dwarka. Agreements made between these nations further weakened the importance of the 5 Seas. This change in routes allows trade from northern nations to rise in importance. Demand for harder to get goods from southern nations inflates their value. Smaller nations begin to prosper and rise as shipping routes allow trade-starved nations to bring their goods to market.

In 110 the pure Murian houses Khazaars (Stalton, Yurick and Zane) are offered a place in the new, all-murian nation of Ne’Davallar. They refuse the invitation because they do not want to leave behind their homeland. In 93 the armies of Khazaars cross the setting sea with the other hosts of Amuria to put an end to the church of blood in Ne’Davallar. The forces allied against Ne’ Davallar found that the nation had made a pact with Daath’dagon and would not fall easily in 93. They are forced to retreat back across the sea by 91. The armies of Khazaars have returned to their homeland by 89 after the end of the crusade is declared by the holy orders.
